Limiting Mach Number

Limiting Mach Number

Definition

Limiting Mach is the maximum mach number at which an aircraft may be operated. Keeping the aircraft below limiting Mach ensures the aircraft will not exceed a related speed, the critical Mach number. Critical Mach is the speed at which airflow over any part of the aircraft becomes supersonic, generating a shock wave. Formation of this shock wave can cause control problems.
