Work in Progress (WIP)

Work in Progress (WIP)

Definition

Work in Progress (WIP) is a reference found in Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) and other flight publications referring to maintenance or construction work on airport surfaces. In addition to alerting flight crews to personnel and equipment on the ramp or on runways and taxiways, this information can also impact aircraft performance data. WIP notifications can involve shortened distances available for takeoff and/or landing. This has a direct bearing on calculations for required runway length for a given aircraft weight, engine power settings, V1 speeds, and other critical numbers.
