At night on 24 July 2014, a McDonnell Douglas MD83 which had just reached cruise altitude over northern Mali crashed after the crew failed to react to stall buffet and stickshaker activation and then failed to take action to recover from the subsequent stall. The Investigation noted that engine anti-icing had not been selected on when in the vicinity of convective weather and concluded that the crew had been slow to recognise a decreasing indicated air speed and increasing pitch attitude caused by erroneously low thrust values generated due to ice crystal contamination of the engine intake pressure sensors.
