On 23 April 2019, the Captain of an Embraer E170 which had just begun its standing start takeoff at Yamagata was unable to correct a slight deviation from the centreline but only initiated a rejected takeoff at around 50 knots. As this action was not immediately followed by the procedurally-required maximum braking, the aircraft subsequently departed the side of the runway and continued on grass for almost 400 metres before finally stopping. The nose wheel steering system was found to be defective but the runway excursion was due to delay in de-selecting takeoff thrust and lack of any braking thereafter.
