System disturbances are likely to be a key factor affecting the acceptance and safety of future automation. Neither hardware nor software can be claimed to be totally reliable and so humans are always required in Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems, which will remain socio-technical systems. Unfortunately, human reliability is also fallible. Hence, an understanding of how human manage system disturbances is required, along with a method for looking at the problem for new systems.
